OCTAVE | interview

“Octave is an emerging techno artists in France. Had his first experience with turntables in 2003 and thereafter concentrated more and more on a minimal approach to techno, which he started to produce by himself in early 2007.
After his first few steps into the techno field with some releases in 2007-2008, he was chosen by none other than Richie Hawtin to take part of the "Sounds From Can Elles" Compilation, and have already signed a remix for Federico Milani at Sui Generiz and have an EP coming on 09 March 2010 also on SGZ.

With his dark and wonderfully detailed sounds have conquered our minds at Sui Generiz, and therefore, here you are an interview with the artist so we can know him a bit better.”

Hello Octave, first of all we would like to thank you for taking the time to have this talk with us! Lets start by this, how is the scene in your city, and how have you started with minimal techno?

Hi ! Thanks to you for your interest and kind words..
I'm from Paris...I don't party a lot in general but in my view there is more places for House than for Techno. There isn't a big underground scene.Just few clubs in which we can found real underground Techno parties, specially one,the Rex Club who's the first undergound club in Paris(maybe the only real one)..

I discovered Minimal/Techno as a DJ after few times in House from Detroit,Chicago and so on...trought a M_nus vinyl,Decompression from Matthew Jonson...A friend did bring it at my home and it was love at first sight !! It was in 2004..I started production a bit after early 2007.
Can you name some djs or producers that have really influenced you at the beginning?
At the begining...was the M_nus team with guys like JPLS or Marc Houle....and I was really in love with Butane and Tony Rohr as well !

Do you still Dj or the whole focus goes to your Live Act performance?

No...no DJing anymore...only focused on my live....trying to make it evolving all the time.

How is your producing studio and what software or hardware do you use?

My producing studio is really basic ! Just have my computer, sound Card and keyboard(found in the street !)...I work on Ableton and Logic Pro...don't have any hardware yet...

Your sound, besides being as dark and as scrutiny as hell, it always have this wonderfull scientific and technologic atmosphere. Are you a huge fan of technology? What are the gadgets you couldn’t live without?

Thanks....atmospheres and mood are really important for me in Techno music...and in music in general.
Yeah I like technology...unfortunatly I can't burn my credit card in it at the moment..hehe...but I like for sure.
Don't have a lot of gadgets...just my big tactile phone with the net...I can't be separated of...;)

At the moment what are the artists that you think are doing the most exciting sound and why?

I'm really digging guys like Audio Injection,Drumcell,Alex Bau,Chris Liebing...also a lot Virgil Enzinger !
In Techno...I really need dark sound....they are brain shakers.

What do you do when you are not making music?

Oh....when I'm not making music...I take care of my girlfriend and my daughter.
And....I listen music...watch movies....Enjoy food and wine.

What future releases have you got coming up?

I've got many releases and remixes out in next months,in vinyl(or not) and digital...the labels are : Android Muziq, Machine Box, Limikola, Phobiq, Momentum, Endemic digital, Fanfare, Sleaze..

You have firstly been called for doing a remix for Federico Milani on [SGZ003] and now you are back again with M.A EP including Hatzler and Mike Wall remixes. What do you feel about them and how do you see Sui Generiz as a label?

Only good things about them ! I didn't know Hatzler before that but now yes...and I really like his style and sound.I really enjoy their both works on M.A, each one really different and amazing...Thanks for their support !

What I like in Sui Generiz is the mind of the label....Friendly and really serious at the same time....with audacious and personnal artistic choices and feelings. And there is a strong wish to build WITH the artist and not just with his tracks.I like that.

For finalizing, tell us what are your Top 5 Sui Generiz tracks?

1-Haztler - Kanasta ( Miro Pajic rmx)
2-Alexx Wolfe - Future Will Come
3-Andy Book - Lost Words ( Sascha Carassi Remix )
4-Zentex - Blue ( Alexx Wolfe Remix)
5-Octave - M.A ( Mike Wall Remix)

No real order...just my 5 favs..

Thank you Octave !
